Georg Friedrich Händel

ans la plus pure tradition anglaise des odes à sainte Cécile, voici Alexander’s Feast, écrit par Haendel en 1736, et dont le succès ne cessa de croître du vivant même du compositeur : il eut l’occasion de redonner personnellement l’œuvre en 1739 puis en 1741, tandis que de nombreuses sociétés chorales la proposaient en oratorio.
    C’est là le grand Haendel, celui de la dernière maturité, de la virtuosité d’écriture et d’exécution, des riches orchestrations et des développements thématiques infinis. Arias alternent avec chœurs et récitatifs accompagnés dans une merveilleuse ronde, bourrée d’inventions, de hardiesses et de surprises – « The list’ning crowd » est un chœur absolument génial de par ses plans sonores résolument opposés.
    L’auditeur l’aura compris, voici un Haendel de la première eau, à ne pas manquer.
